Future Goals
Protect Natural Resources
- Continue our current plans and relationships; strengthen if necessary.
- Create an oyster shell collection bin so we can increase our living shoreline
- Create a Wildlife plan, to protect our endangered species and control any wildlife infiltration (such as coyotes).
- Resiliency was a new topic in our 2020 Comprehensive Plan update. It’ll be interesting to see how this has adapted in our upcoming Comp Plan rewrite, especially with all the drainage improvements and code updates we have enacted. Either way, increasing island resiliency will be a goal for years to come.
- Marsh islands- we have changed zoning to reduce over development, but we need a complete plan to address what is and isn’t allowed
Keep Folly Funky
- Expand community events for all of Folly’s demographics
Require franchises and contracts to employ a certain percentage of locals - Use surveys and social media to engage the public in current issues
- Reinvestment into our parks and recreation. Making sure our PRC meets the needs of all island demographics with a park’s usage report.
- Incentives to keep our historic beach cottages intact.
We love our post office, but we need to work with them to ensure proper mail/package delivery and resident satisfaction.
Moving the City to the future
- City Hall needs to be more “user friendly”. Streamline customer interaction. Use new technology to increase efficiency
- Utilize solar panels, electric vehicles, “smart” accessories, etc. to lessen waste and spending.
- Make licensing and permitting more efficient to avoid lengthy delays in processing.
- All departments need annual continuing education on hot topics, procedures, new policies, etc. to ensure common knowledge and proper information is being given.
Continue building our reserve accounts. Utilize grant opportunities, work with state and federal officials for large projects and cut wasteful spending so that we can ensure proper account reserves for emergencies.
Enhancing Public Safety
- Continue pedestrian paths in high traffic areas
- Create a Community Liaison Officer. This person would be the public’s first contact at City Hall for livability issues such as noisy neighbors, illegal dumping, speeding, etc., but also simple items such as car jumps, senior citizen welfare checks, giving children tours of the station, etc.
- Finish the Arctic Avenue project and use this as a model for future improvements.
- Continue utilizing our Safety Action Plan and working with DOT to help alleviate high problem areas, including stop sign studies and high-speed prevention methods.
- Schedule a traffic control officer to work traffic and pedestrian crossing at Ashley/Center intersection during peak times, and Indian/Center during church services.
- Continue working with Dominion adding LED street lighting.
Explore New Revenue Streams
- Work with CCPRC to raise their annual park contribution
Ensure everyone doing business in the city has a business license, including all delivery trucks (Sysco, Budweiser), virtual businesses (UBER, Instacart), etc. that slip through the cracks.
Continue to be aggressive with grant funding, both state and federal. - Examine new construction, impact, destination and event fees
- Start an “Adopt-A-ROW/Access/Path” program to help keep our island clean and raise funds
- Work with current Federal administration to end the 50+ year old JIPSD agricultural loan, which will save us over 200k annually.
- Overhaul of Franchise Agreements and other contracts to ensure the City is getting its fair share of revenue.
